Vintage Utopias up for auction

Skinners, a Boston-based auction house, will be auctioning off a bottle of beer for the first time during its Fine Wine Auction tomorrow.

Skinners claims that their auctioning off of a two bottle lot of the 2007 Samuel Adams Utopias will be the first auction house in the U.S. to auction off a beer.

The 2007 Samuel Adams Utopias was the world strongest beer when it was released, at a hefty 27 percent ABV.

Skinners estimates that the Utopias will sell for between $350 and $550.

I’m not sure where I stand on auctioning off beer. I’m not a huge fan of people doing it on eBay. However, for some reason, a legitimate auction house doing it doesn’t bother me as much.

Also, Samuel Adams Utopias, like many fine liquors and wines, can be viewed as more of a collectible than something you drink. Personally, I think people should drink it, but that’s besides the point.

What do you think? Do you support auctioning off a beer in this way?

Either way, I have a 2007 Samuel Adams Utopias sitting in my basement, waiting for a couple of more years before I open it. I better put it under lock and key to prevent theft.

I’m curious to see how much someone is willing to pay for this, and  I wonder if other beers that are suitable for aging will find their way into auction houses?
