Beer of the Month: Smuttynose Zinneke

I have never been a big fan of Belgian stouts. Some have been OK, but for the most part, I’ve been left disappointed with the style.

That’s why this month’s Beer of the Month selection of Smuttynose Brewing Company’s Zinneke was so surprising to me. I really wasn’t looking forward to it, and I absolutely loved it.

The Zinneke is 8.4 percent ABV and a portion of the beer is aged in bourbon barrels.

The oak adds a nice toasted vanilla flavor to this beer, which already featured chocolate and caramel notes. The beer is not as full-bodied as a lot of big stouts, but it still fits into the category and it makes it an easy drinking beer.

The Belgian yeast used in this beer really compliments the rest of the flavors, instead of dominating the beer.

Overall, this beer is a winner. If you see it on the shelf, you should grab it and give it a try. You won’t be disappointed.
