Chief Concerns

"Look, if they need to act out and wear black to games or whatever it is, if they feel they need to do that, then so be it," said Eric Winston. "My goal is to win. And when you can start winning, then that stuff kinda settle's itself. When you don't win, then this is the kind of stuff that can happen. I don't pay attention to be quite honest with you."

That's the goal, but it didn't happen Mr. Winston, didn't happen...again. Valiant effort by the defense and 12th man against the Denver Broncos, but the offense laid another egg.

Still, fans were happy with the performance.

"It was a great game," said one Chiefs fan. "Everyone played with heart. They wanted a win and went for it. Remember, we were playing Peyton Manning. They sacked him and held him to 2 TD's. Denver did not look like a championship team today. Manning was frustrated when he left and wondering what went wrong. And why did this all take place? Because the fans showed up and the red sea was alive and united."

Justin Houston, heart. Jamaal Charles, plenty of heart. But the rest? Not so much. This team hasn't been the total package. The defense has shown guts at different times this season. Against the Saints in the second half, the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers. Against better teams the defense has shown they belong in the NFL, but the offense has looked helpless.

Minus 2010 this offense has had its issues for several seasons now. For the first time since 1976, the Chiefs have lost their first six home games.

The defense did EVERYTHING they could to help the offense change things Sunday against the Broncos. Getting to Manning like Houston did, twice in the first half, that hasn't been happening to Manning. But the defense didn't care, they came after him. Holding the Broncos to just 17 points? It was the first time all season the Broncos had been held to fewer than 20 points.

Bravo defense! But it wasn't the first time KC had scored less than 10 in a game this season. It's happened four times and the Chiefs have scored above 20 just twice. Nine times last year the Chiefs scored 10 or less in a game. The average was 15.2 coming into the game, that average dropped to 14.6 Sunday. The Chiefs have averaged 9.3 over their last three games.

A big problem yesterday was the coaching. Hey Brian Daboll, before you ask Peyton Hillis to throw...make sure he can. Might help. Just an idea.

The coaching, especially Romeo Crennel helped blow this game.

Maybe the offense is capable of more, it's possible, but for sure Daboll has mishandled his part. At one point Crennel was yelling at Daboll.

To have such a great first half just to have six points to show for it? Instead of going for it on 4th and two, they kick a field goal. Crennel said he took the points on the board. OK, but you're 1-9...Daboll you're 1-9. Go for it!

So while the defense played hard, fans showed and Charles ran with reckless abandonment, too many still didn't do anything to help this team win...again. No Crennel, I'm not into "moral" victory.

The experience, playing close and good enough considering it's Manning doesn't cut it with me. It just doesn't.

I'm ready to win, at least at home. It's been 36 years since the Chiefs have been this bad at home. That's what fans need to see, that's what needs put into focus.
