The War of 1812: A Guide to Battlefields and Historic Sites, a companion guide to the PBS television special broadcast in October 2011, is a recent addition to the shelves of the Midwest Genealogy Center. The War of 1812 is often called "the forgotten war" because its causes and consequences are remembered by few. The war had its beginning with the disrespect Great Britain had for our maritime forces. Great Britain was "the most powerful nation on earth," and she was impressing American seamen into British naval service. For two-and-a-half years the battles raged on, but few remember those battles and their consequences.

This work by John Grant and Ray Jones is beautifully done and provides an excellent background in War of 1812 events. The battles are described in historical perspective, and the battlefields are described as to what one will see today. Portraits of the principle players, reproduction drawings, maps, and current photographs are interspersed with the written content. The 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 serves as a time to reflect on this little-known chapter of U.S. history.
