David Cook's older brother and inspiration, Adam Cook, has lost his battle with cancer, according to the singer.

Cook, the Blue Springs South High School graduate who won the 'American Idol' competition in 2008, announced the news about his older brother this morning in Washington, D.C., where he is grand marshal at D.C.'s Race for Hope 5k which raises money to support finding a cure for brain cancer.

"Like everybody here, I'm affected by this disease. I actually lost my brother yesterday to a brain tumor," Cook told the stunned crowd. "I couldn't imagine being anywhere else right now."

David ran the 3.1 miles in 28 minutes.

Adam Cook, 36, was a lawyer. For more than a decade he battled brain cancer, which had spread to his spine. He leaves a wife and their children.
