The Blue Springs Board of Education usually meets the first and second Monday of each month. Because of scheduling conflicts, the board met May 6, 2008, and took the following action (unanimous unless otherwise noted):
• Approved the first day of school for Aug. 19.
• Approved one bid for marching band uniforms for Blue Springs South High School. The bid was awarded to Demoulin for $116,295. This was not the low bid. However, because the low bid was not to specifications, the next lowest was recommended by Blue Springs South staff.
• Heard an evaluation on the A-plus programs at Blue Springs and Blue Springs South high schools. Both programs received official approval from the state April 24.
• Heard a presentation on a possible elementary collaboration program. This program would include four, two-hour collaborative sessions during the year for elementary teachers. In addition, the proposal calls for 10 minutes to be added onto the beginning of each school day at the elementary level.
• Discussed one policy revision. This involves graduate credits teachers might earn during the year. The portion of the policy being removed is no longer needed due to revisions in state of Missouri certification requirements to become an educator or to add additional areas of certification to an educator’s current teaching certification.
• Discussed a board resolution for intent to reimburse the district. The resolution is for up to $6 million the district has already spent to purchase property. This property includes the land Liggett Trails Education Center now sits on and the former MCC-Blue River building the district purchased last year. It now houses the Parents As Teachers program.
