The Independence Board of Education meets the second Tuesday of each month. This month, the board met Aug. 12, 2008 and took the following action. All action is unanimous unless otherwise noted:
 

  • Recognized Stephanie Vickers as one of 25 Teaching Ambassador Fellows with the U.S. Department of Education. She is a seventh grade mathematics teacher at Pioneer Ridge Middle School.
  • Approved the renewal of the Independence School District’s membership to the Cooperating School Districts of Greater Kansas City. The membership dues for the 2008-09 school year are $21,436.
  • Approved curriculum guides K-12 for the 2008-09 school year. These guides are in the areas of communication arts and literacy, mathematics, science, social studies and health. In addition, guides for physical education, music and art are complete for K-8 and advisory for 9-12. All curriculum guides meet specifications as outlined by the Missouri School Improvement Program.
  • Approved the renewal of the cash management resolution for the 2008-09 school year. This resolution allows the district to utilize a variety of banking and investment options. It also provides the district with the flexibility to secure the highest interest rate when investing district funds.
  • Approved the renewal of depository services with Commerce Bank for the 2008-09 school year as well as updated signature card authorizations.
  • Heard a presentation on the health services program. In the coming year, goal include implementing an annual screening report for families that includes height, weight, BMI, vision, hearing and scoliosis as well as the ongoing development of a staff health and wellness program.
  • Approved a date for the annual tax rate levy hearing. The hearing will be at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 26 at Glendale Elementary.
  • Approved the resignation of Tammie Lay, Thomas Hart Benton; James Howard, Truman High School and Tara Corwin, Truman high School.
  • Approved the employment of Rebecca Kindle, special education; Lois Kruegar, GED Options; Lauren Way, physical education; Larry Schupp, mathematics; Lynda Holder, special education; Angela Hill, social studies; Erin Barrier, vocal music; Melanie Briggs, speech and drama; Veronica Perez, Spanish; Andrea Brown, elementary; Marsha Warner, elementary and Tiffani Rude, elementary.
