With the name finally revealed, students and families who will soon attend Little Blue Elementary now have the chance to decide the mascot and the colors of their new school.

Little Blue’s Mascot Selection Kick-off event is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bingham Middle School. All students and families who will attend Little Blue this fall are invited to attend.

The event will serve as the start of the mascot selection process for the new school, 2020 Quail Drive, which is just south of MCC-Blue River off Jackson Drive. There will be special presentations from the Missouri Mavericks and the Missouri Department of Conservation’s Burr Oak Woods Nature Center in Blue Springs, as well as discussions of the type of mascot students and families want.

A formal announcement of the mascot and school colors will come later this summer. An open house has also been scheduled for July 19.

Immediately following the meeting, there will be a short PTA meeting where the PTA by-laws will be approved and officers will be nominated.

The name of the district’s newest elementary school was unveiled last month. It was chosen because of is proximity to the Little Blue Creek, the Little Blue Trace Trail and MCC-Blue River.

“The selection of the name reflects the beautiful location of the school,” said Jeff Williams, principal of the school. “It is just one of the many highlights that students and families will enjoy as Little Blue Elementary opens its doors this fall.”

Williams said it has always been his intention to involve the students and families who will attend the new facility as much as possible when it comes to creating Little Blue’s identity. New attendance boundaries were approved in May, which create Little Blue’s population, largely from students who attended Spring Branch and Blackburn elementary schools.

“Although the planning is a large challenge, our greatest effort will be working with the students and families of the new elementary school in establishing a school culture that is student-centered and strives to inspire greatness within each of our students,” he said. “It is so exciting for a community to open a new school, and to be a part of that is such an honor.”
