Scouts from all over Independence and Blue Springs attended the first Merit Badge Event for the Blue Elk District Saturday, hosted by Troop 161.
The event was held at Vatterott College, which stepped up after the original venue became unavailable. Scouts had the opportunity to earn as many as two merit badges in a single day. Scouts from three other districts came and joined in the fun. More than 240 boys registered for the 26 different classes offered. Attendance was lower than that due to sports obligations that popped up during the week. Six Eagle-required classes were offered. Then there were the fun classes. Boys had a blast on a simulated archeological dig. They had a tough time negotiating a straight line on a skate board with “drunk” glasses on.
In the home repairs class, there was a wall to paint and a toilet to repair. During the lunch time there was a “midway.” The 30-plus boys taking first aid all became CPR certified. The Explorer Post associated with the Fire Department were a great bunch of young men and women who helped with that very large class. We know that the boys in the class came out learning about what to do in the case of an emergency. The fire department, the DARE officers, Whispering Winds Trading Post and the Mavericks were a few of the vendors present for some lunch time activity.
As everyone was packing up and leaving after a full day of learning activities, people were asking about the date for next year. Stay tuned for information.
