Student selected for national program
Calleine Harms, Independence, was selected for a competitive spot at the Institute on Comparative Political and Economic Systems this summer in Washington, D.C.

ICPES is an educational program offered by the Fund for American Studies in partnership with Georgetown University. She has completed her second year at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., majoring in international relations.

During the eight-week program, Harms gained professional experience interning with U.S. Rep. Nancy Boyda, D-Kansas, networking with professionals at taking classes at Georgetown. In addition, students attended panels and discussions on topics such as climate change.

MU student earns communication honor

Courtney Dixon, Lee’s Summit, received a Department of Communications Scholarship at the University of Missouri-Columbia, one of 20 students to receive the scholarship. Selection criteria include a combination of grade point average, instructor evaluations and extra-curricular activities.
Dixon is a 2004 graduate from Blue Springs South and is a senior majoring in communications.

Blue Springs graduate garners STAR award
Katherine Clark, Blue Springs, was one of eight students at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg to have received high distinction in University Housing. These students were inducted into the STAR Chapter of the National Residence Hall Honorary, which represents the top 1 percent of residence hall leaders in regard to their leadership ability, service and recognition.

K-State student takes second in challenge
Kevin Chow, Independence, was a part of a team of Kansas State University architectural students to win second place in the 2008 Student Design Project Competition sponsored by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-conditioning engineers.

For the competition, students had to select a heating, ventilating and air-conditioning system for a community recreational center in a residential area of Nashville, Tenn. Chow is a 2008 graduate in architectural engineering.
