The Independence Board of Education meets the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. The board held a special session May 6, 2008, and took the following action (all actions were unanimous unless otherwise noted):
• Allowed bids for 1,300 new desktop computers.
• Approved group health insurance plan from Blue Cross/ Blue Shield and continuation of full benefits for employee dental, long-term disability and life insurance.
• Provided evaluation of the child welfare initiative program. Future plans include growth of mental health intiative that provides clinical mental health to kids and families, improved partnership in the area of truancy and increased funding by the State for Child Welfare Initiative.
• Provided evaluation of the Math/Physics Institute. The primary future goal of MPI is to increase the number of students enrolled, expand the use of technology and go beyond a calculus-based platform.
• Approved election for exclusive representative of certified staff.
