Five finalists in The Examiner’s name that Central Hockey League team contest gave their take on why the franchise should be known as the Missouri Mavericks.
Jim Collings
Platte City | contest winner
“In Independence and in Missouri people kind of stand out on their own. They do things maybe not the easiest way, but they do things the unconventional way. A maverick is somebody that does things that way. I hope this team, I hope this town and this area takes this team to heart and supports them.”
Jackie Peck
St. Joseph | 5th place
“When I think of a maverick, I think of someone who has an edge to them. I think that a hockey team should have an edge to them. That’s where I was leaning when I thought of that.”
Georgia McKinney
Lone Jack | 4th place
“I just recently retired from Lake City (ATA) about a year ago and I was a gunner out there and I felt like I was a maverick. I shot .50 caliber guns.”
Jeremy McGowan
Blue Springs | 3rd place
“Pretty much the same as what (Collings) said about Missouri. I wanted to think outside the box on this one.”
Sarah Rousseau
Blue Springs | Runner up
“Actually my husband and I talked about it and we kind of decided that it would be a good name because of what it means; being driven.”
