Berean Free Will Baptist Church is holding its 4th Sunday night singing beginning at 6 p.m. Sunday, at the church, 2014 James Downey Road, Independence.

This open mic night will feature some long time favorites and some new talent. Come to sing, play or just listen.

St. John LaLande holds garage sale

St. John LaLande Church in Blue Springs is holding a huge garage sale from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, at the church, 805 N.W. R.D. Mize Road.

The Parish Center will be overflowing with treasures for the whole family. Wednesday and Thursday will be “Bag Days,” $3 per bag. 

 

Faith in Action Prayer Breakfast features Don Piper

Don Piper, pastor and author of “90 Minutes in Heaven” will speak at the Truman Heritage Habitat for Humanity 2017 Faith in Action Prayer Breakfast Thursday at Woods Chapel United Methodist Church, 4725 N.E. Lakewood Way, Lee’s Summit.

Doors will open at 6:45 a.m. and there will be a breakfast mingle and special music from Ancora Choral as Director Kristopher Taylor leads us in song prior to Piper's address at 7:30 a.m.

He will be sharing and addressing attendees with his message of faith, hope and healing. He experienced a true story of death and life after a fatal accident when his Ford Escort was hit by an 18 wheeler head on. He was killed instantly and pronounced “dead” by four sets of EMTs. God worked a miracle and sent him back in a broken body.

Dinner to benefit Wagstaff family

A benefit dinner for Independence Police Officer Tom Wagstaff and his family will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 9349 E. 65th St., Raytown. Officer Wagstaff was shot while answering a burglary call.

The dinner will include a fish, chicken or pasta selection, along with a salad bar, dessert bar, and a drink. (Carry-out will be available.) There will also be a silent auction and raffle; attendance to win not required.

St. Mark's Catholic Church golf tourney planned

St. Mark’s is holding its 13th annual Golf Tournament Friday at Adams Pointe Golf Course in Blue Springs. The shotgun start is at 8 a.m.

Proceeds will benefit St. Mark the Evangelist Youth Group in Independence.

Jacomo Chorale concert April 29

The Jacomo Chorale will present its spring concert, “The Sprig of Thyme,” at 7 p.m. April 29, at Plaza Heights Baptist Church, 1500 E. Clark Road, Blue Springs, then again at 4 p.m. April 30, at Colbern Road Community of Christ, 27507 E. Colbern Road, Lee's Summit.

The concert features John Rutter's collection of British folk songs by the same name and also includes American folk songs. An arrangement of “O Susanna” arranged by Doug Rottering, a member of the Chorale will be premiered.

Both concerts have free admission and donations will be accepted. 

 

Messiah Lutheran hosts spring rally

The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League Missouri District Kansas City South Zone Spring Rally will be held April 29, at Messiah Lutheran Church, 613 S. Main St., Independence. The rally theme is “Our Leaves of Springtime.”

Registration begins at 9 a.m. and opening devotion is at 9:30 a.m. “Gifts of the Heart” will be monetary donations for the care of Jessy the Comfort Dog from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Concordia, Mo.

Yard sale May 6 at Unity

Unity of Independence is holding its 3rd annual Yard/Trunk Sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 6, at the church, 14304 E. 39th St., Independence.

However, they are advertising now for people who have items they wish to sell. They are renting out parking spots and everyone sells directly from their car or trunk.

Graduation gifts for homeless students

The Independence Ministerial Alliance is supporting an effort to provide gift cards for graduating Independence School District homeless teens who have to work harder than most to making their dream of graduating from high school a reality. This will help in their challenge of starting out in life, going to college or into the work force.

Tax deductible donations can be made through the IMA or checks given to ISD Foundation and marked for IMA Homeless Seniors Graduation Project. If you wish to donate, send by May 11 to: Rev. Sherry McGlaughlin, Pastor, 3625 Blue Ridge Blvd, Independence, MO. 64052. The IMA will present the funds to the Independence School District Foundation which oversees funds directed to homeless students.
