Oakland UMC celebrates 136 years
On Sunday, the Oakland United Methodist Church congregation will celebrate 136 years as a community of faith in Eastern Jackson County.
Instead of the traditional morning worship service, an 11 a.m. service-in-song will be led by The Circuit Riders, a well-known men’s “faith-in-harmony” group, and the new steeple will be dedicated.
Everyone is invited to bring a dish to share and lawn chairs for a pot-luck brunch and a good visit following the service.
The church, located at 30701 E. Truman Road near Buckner, was constructed in 1881 on an acre of ground donated by John Van Dyke, with materials and labor provided by residents of the community.
