The City of Independence Environmental Health Division conducts inspections anywhere food is handled, prepared and served to the public within city limits. Critical violations must be handled within 72 hours.
Los Compas, 18011 E. U.S. 24 – On Aug. 14, the hand sink along the back wall had various tools in its basin. There were no paper towels in the dispensers at either hand sink in the kitchen.
Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, 19510 E. U.S. 40 – On Aug. 14, handles on the hand sink across from the walk-in freezer had heavy food residue build-up.
Jazz A Louisiana Kitchen, 19700 E. Valley View Pkwy. – On Aug. 15, a dirty towel was found in the dessert cooler under utensils.
Steak 'N Shake, 13621 E. U.S. 40 – On Aug. 15, both make tables on the cook line and in drive thru were out of temperature; repair, until then, they'll use time as a temperature control. A pan of tomatoes in the walk in-cooler had no cover. A fan in front of the walk-in cooler had a heavy build-up of dirt.
Long John Silvers/A&W, 11211 E. U.S. 40 – On Aug. 22, pipes had collapsed and there was sewage in the lobby; the toilets were removed and the facility voluntarily closed.
Old Mexico, 1032 E. 23rd St. – On Aug. 22, 3 the door to the reach-in cooler was not working; owner had already removed food and is getting it repaired. Raw chicken was stored directly on top of raw beef.
Gold Lion, 2411 S. M-291 – On Aug. 23, the 3-compartment sink and the hand sink in the back prep area were not working. Two large bowls of raw chicken were 62 and 65 degrees. There were no paper towels at hand sink in cooking area. An employee handled fried chicken with bare hands; chicken was discarded and employee was instructed not to touch food with bare hands.
King Wok, 4376 S. Noland Road – On Aug. 23, 4 pans of raw chicken were sitting out at temperature ranges from 52 to 58 degrees. No paper towels were found in the men or women's restroom. Food was being prepped in the dining area and a pot was sitting in the hand sink.
