Fifth graders at Prairie Branch Elementary School in Grain Valley recently decorated dog biscuits to donate to the Independence Animal Shelter.

Teachers Stacy Brown and Tammera Lewis had their classes participate in the service project during their December holiday party. They dropped the cookies off at the shelter last month.

How did you decide to do a project that benefited the animal shelter?
Brown: Some of the parents wanted to do a gift exchange or donate to the food pantry, but some of our kids use those services, so we felt kind of awkward. We picked the dog shelter because it felt more neutral.

How long have you been doing this service project with your students?
Brown:
I’ve done this every year since I was a student teacher. Tammera joined this year.
Lewis: My kids didn’t know they got to decorate dog treats in place of a craft until the day of the party.

What do kids like about this service project?
Brown:
They freak out because we do frosting with dog-safe material. We use little kibbles as sprinkles and use our hands to spread frosting. It’s messy and fun. They all have pets, so it’s something they all share in common.
Lewis: They’d rather do this than some other craft.

What other service projects do your students participate in throughout the year?
Lewis:
There’s a school-wide student council canned food drive. There’s also a coat, hat and glove drive and a used book drive.
