Liberty coach Chad Frigon stood near the Blue Jays bus after his squad edged Blue Springs South 13-7 Friday night at Larry Stewart Memorial Stadium.
He and his family, fans and members of the media were trying to figure out if Liberty would play host to the Jaguars in the opening round of the Class 6 playoffs next Friday at William Jewell College.
The win helped the Blue Jays slip past Class 6 No. 9 South in the new playoff point system, and barring an appeal, the Jaguars will likely play the first game of the playoffs against the Blue Jays.
“We told our kids there are a lot of scenarios in regards to postseason,” Frigon said after Liberty improved to 5-4 overall and 3-2 in league play. “We'll see what happens.”
South coach Greg Oder was in no mood to try and figure out the postseason standings as his team mounted a dramatic fourth-quarter drive that stalled on the Blue Jays' 21-yard line when time ran out.
“A few more seconds and who knows what happens,” Oder said after South dropped to 5-4 and 3-2. “Our kids played their butts off in the second half, but like so many of our other games, a play or two or penalties just do us in.
“Tonight, a ball hits off one of our kid's helmet on a punt, they get it and score the winning touchdown. Come on ... We can't let that happen.”
Liberty scored two touchdowns in the second period. The first came on a 61-yard pass from Brock Dorothy to Matthew Zombo. South's Josh Menard blocked the extra point and it was 6-0.
South's defense stopped the Blue Jays cold on their next possession and Jacob Zimmerman got off a short punt that bounced off a Jaguar player’s helmet into the hands of a Liberty special team player.
The Blue Jays used a tackle-eligible pass play to Jake Francis that set up a 7-yard touchdown pass from Dorothy to Zombo. Andrew Fishel's extra point made it 13-0 at the half.
But the Jaguars proved they weren't about to give up as a 34-yard run by quarterback Dalton Brewer paved the way to a 1-yard touchdown run by Khorey Kilgore with 2:41 left in the third period.
But that was all the offense the Jaguars could manage as a defense led by middle linebacker Devin Houston created havoc in the South backfield.

“We saw a lot of film on them this week and felt like they would have trouble handling our blitz,” said Houston, who had his hands in Brewer's face much of the night.
On the final South drive, the Jaguars drove from their 10 to the Blue Jay 21 when Houston broke into the South backfield and grabbed Brewer as he threw an incomplete pass as time ran out.
The punt thing, big penalties all hurt,” Oder said, “but like I told the kids, this is Week 9 and that we need to play better in Week 10. No matter who or where we play.”
