Independence community members can stop referring to the new elementary school as the “east elementary” because it now has a name.
The Independence Board of Education voted unanimously Tuesday to name the new facility Little Blue Elementary. A group of community members have been meeting for several weeks to decide on the new name and felt Little Blue was the best choice.
The school is on Holke Road, just south of the MCC-Blue River campus.
“They took in several considerations including the Little Blue Creek, the Little Blue Trace Trail and, of course, its proximity to Blue River (Community College),” said Independence Superintendent Jim Hinson about the group’s recommendations. “They felt like Little Blue was the perfect fit.”
Little Blue Elementary is expected to be completed later this summer. The roof is finished and about 95 percent of the drywall on the interior has been completed. Painting is also continuing and the kitchen equipment will be installed in the next few weeks.
Bob Robinson, director of buildings and grounds, said there has been a small “hiccup” with the skylights in the canopies along the entryway. Those, he said, will not be completed until the middle of July, but will be ready in time for an open house scheduled for July 19.
Hinson said the next step is deciding the colors and mascot. A committee of parents and students, who are coming from Spring Branch and Blackburn elementary schools, will meet with principal Jeff Williams next month to discuss those areas.
Little Blue is the first of two new facilities that are coming to the Independence School District. An elementary school is also being constructed in Sugar Creek to help offset overcrowding on the western side of the district.
