Miguel Bastian, a fifth grader this fall at Little Blue Elementary, was quick to answer what he liked most about his new school.
“The gym. It’s huge,” he said. “The basketball court is awesome.”
Hundreds of students, parents and community members visited Little Blue Thursday during an open house. Little Blue, which is just south of Metropolitan Community Colleges-Blue River, is the district’s first new elementary school in 32 years. Superintendent Jim Hinson said it feels great to be standing in the completed facility.
“The decision to put a bond issue on the (2009) ballot was hard because of the poor economic times. But it just shows how solidly this community supports our kids. They care about them,” he said. “I think what I like most about the building is the color combinations in the different wings. It is very attractive to the kids.”
In the center of the 55,000-square-foot building are the media center and cafeteria. From the media center, students can go to four separate wings – K-2 classrooms, the third through fifth grade classrooms, music and art, and the Behavior Academic and Social Skills classroom.
“We thought this was a good opportunity to check out the new school the kids will be going to,” said Daniel Richards, a parent of two Little Blue students. “Its very nice, and the boys seem to like it.”
Families had the opportunity to tour the building, make crafts and find out the school’s mascot – the Sharks. Staff members and teachers were also available to meet with students.
“As we approach the beginning of a new school year, we know that there will be even more anticipation and excitement because of this facility,” said Jeff Williams, principal of the school. “The hallways are open and airy and are filled with natural light and an abundance of color. We will also challenge our students with rigor and relevance in the classroom.”
Alex Mackey, a parent of a second grader, said he is glad families had the opportunity to tour the new building before the start of the school year.
“She went to Blackburn last year, so this is a completely new school for her,” he said of his daughter Elise. “I also wanted to come out and support the school district and to see what has been done. It is a great building.”
Hank Richards, who will be in first grade, said he loves the new school.
“I like the cafeteria. It’s my favorite,” he said. “The classrooms are great too.”
