Project Tracker: Independence School District’s new elementary school in western  Independence/Sugar Creek.

Location: Southeast corner of North Forest Street and Silver Lane, Sugar Creek.

Cost: Part of the $85 million bond issue in 2009 is funding the construction of the elementary school on the west side of the Independence School District.

Completion date: July 2013

The details: The goal is to relieve overcrowding at the elementary schools in western Independence. This includes Korte, Three Trails and Sugar Creek. It will be the second elementary school to open as a result of the bond issue. The first is Little Blue Elementary in eastern Independence.

The progress: Grading and excavation work has been completed. Numerous trees and other debris have also been cleared. Construction crews are working on the initial groundwork to begin construction. Masonry work is expected to begin sometime in the next couple of weeks.

Quote: “We are moving at a good pace,” said Bob Robinson, director of buildings and grounds. “The crews are working hard, and we expect to be open next July.”
