Sheila Solon, the current state representative in the 55th District, and Chris Lievsay, a Blue Springs City Council member, are the Republican candidates for the 31st Missouri House District, a new district which encompasses a square-shaped area in Blue Springs south of Interstate 70, west of Adams Dairy Parkway, slightly south of Colbern Road into Lee’s Summit and west through Lake Jacomo and Blue Springs Lake. The primary election is Aug. 7. The winner will run against the Democratic winner for the seat on Nov. 6.

Solon has been a resident of Blue Springs 21 years. Before serving in the Missouri House of Representatives, Solon served three years on the Blue Springs City Council and nine years on the Blue Springs Planning Commission, as well as on several other boards and commissions in the city.

Solon was named Freshman Legislator of the Year for her work as a senior citizen advocate and later as Legislator of the Year, among other awards.

What have been your accomplishments during your service in the Missouri House of Representatives?
We passed a balanced budget without adding any new taxes and without cuts to elementary and secondary education.

For the past two years I, have been working diligently on a dedicated revenue stream to help fund our veterans’ homes. The governor signed the bill that returned the casino admission fees (paid by the casinos) back to our veterans as they originally had received prior to 1998.

I have the distinction of being named Legislator of the Year by the VFW, The Missouri Association of Veterans Organizations and the American Legion for my efforts on their behalf.

What three areas will you concentrate on should you be re-elected to your position?
I will fight to keep government small and continue to resist mandates at state and local levels. I’ll continue my support for greater local control of successful school districts and oppose open enrollment.

To regain a thriving community, we need to re-evaluate regulations, taxes and government spending to make sure that we are not being held at an economic disadvantage.

What separates you from your competitor, Chris Lievsay?
Experience. In my personal life of being a supportive wife to Charlie and together being active and involved parents of two grown children that have gone through the Blue Springs School District K-12.

My business experience keeps me in touch with the climate of the economy and an understanding of how folks are fairing.

Twelve years of service in local government have also served me well. My colleagues at the capitol come to me for input and advice on many issues, especially those concerning local government. In this tough economy we need people who have the experience, work ethic, and ability to lead.

What Blue Springs issues would you concentrate on if you’re re-elected?
Blue Springs has invested heavily in The Missouri Innovation Park. It is a top local priority and my job as representative is to find ways to help.

This is why I supported MOSIRA, the Missouri Science and Innovation Reinvestment Act. MOSIRA would have brought high paying, high tech, jobs to our state.  These are the kind of jobs that MIP needs.

I will continue to endeavor for the passage of this bill.
