I never really thought about it being a family problem. Perhaps, it could be a genetic thing. I’m not sure.

I recalled years ago when I was in a real hurry, with seven children and places to take them. I shouted to all who needed to be dropped off, to hurry and get in the car. They quickly loaded, half dressed, mouths full of food, lunch bags in tow and backpacks in hand.

As I was yelling “sit down and seat belts,” I narrowly missed my neighbor’s mailbox. It was so close that the mailbox actually popped open and her mail fell out. It was frightening. The kids were tossed sideways and one flipped upside down. A small voice from the back of the car cheered, “Yes, do it again.”

Later that day I reported the incident to my neighbor and she told me not to worry. Although later, after we inspected the mailbox and found that we had knocked a few nails loose. We quickly repaired the box, at a cost of just under a $1.

I had not thought about the neighbor’s mailbox for some time, until I recently talked with a couple of my kids.

Just a short while ago, my daughter, who lives in Idaho with her four children and hubby (names have been deleted to protect the innocent), mentioned her mailbox incident.

Her son Dallin had forgotten his library book, which would be a 10-cent fine. Mom, with Dallin, hurried home and in her haste, backed into her neighbor’s mailbox, which went exploding across the neighbor’s driveway. What a mess, at a horrendous cost.

The total mailbox repair was $700, to prevent a 10-cent library fee. Whew!

Shortly thereafter, my oldest son, living in Utah, was pulling out of his driveway. He had a stye in his eye and was headed to the eye doc. He was not wearing his contacts and, as he searched for his glasses, they fell onto the floor of their van.

During that brief moment of reaching for his eye glasses, my dear son plowed into his neighbor’s mailbox while driving 10 mph. Without noticing, he totaled the beautiful stone box, a $1,000 structure. To make matters worse, the airbags deployed and my son landed in the ER with medical burns. Let’s talk cost.

And he was driving cautiously, carefully.

This is what makes me think this could be heredity.

Whatever it is, we need to insure our auto and homeowners policies for a mailbox incidences.

Or we can have a family text for YGM&TB.

You’ve got mail – and the box!
