Police are continuing their search of the shoreline of the Little Blue River for evidence after two kayakers on Monday discovered the skeletal remains of a human hand.
Jackson County Sheriff Mike Sharp said during a news conference Tuesday afternoon that 30 to 40 search and rescue members and police officers are searching about 1 1/2 miles of shoreline from where the hand was found.
A pair of boaters made the discovery about 3 p.m. Monday. Police said the hand was up against some rocks along the shore at a spot north of R.D. Mize Road near South Necessary Road.
Sharp dispelled speculation that the remains were those of Summer Shipp, whose body was found in 2007. She had gone missing in December 2004 while conducting market research in the 1500 block of West College Terrace in Independence.
“We have information that leads us to believe that it’s not Shipp,” Sharp said.
The hand, which also included parts of forearm bones, was found about 1 1/2 miles upstream from where she was found.
However, Sharp said an forensic anthropologist will examine the remains today to make a determination on the gender.
Sharp declined to speculate who the remains may be of and instead asked the Kansas City public that if they know someone who is missing to please contact police.
“We’re reviewing our missing persons cases right now,” he said.
Sharp said teams will search along the shoreline and the river today and make a determination on whether or not to continue.
“It’s pretty rugged area,” he said. “The river is pretty shallow right now, which is good for a search effort. We’re not going to give up on this.”
Cadaver dogs are being used, as is a search helicopter from the Kansas City Police Department.
Anyone with information should call 816-474-TIPS.
