The city of Independence has decided to support the Independence School District’s plans for the former Rockwood Golf Club.
The City Council Monday night met in executive session before its regular session to discuss Rockwood, a subject that is allowed in a closed session since it is a matter of real estate.
According to a statement issued by the city, council members discussed the Rockwood Golf Club and various options that have been presented for use of the property. A school district representative also was present and outlined the district’s interest in Rockwood.
“After consideration, the council will support the Independence School District’s plans for the property,” the statement reads.
Last week, Independence School District Superintendent Jim Hinson said the district would like to use a portion of the land for a new elementary school site, with the remaining portion going toward a 9- or 18-hole golf course for the high schools’ golf teams, as well as for employee use.
About 200 neighbors of the 91-acre historic golf course at Hardy Avenue and Westport Road attended a town-hall meeting June 14 on the future of Rockwood, overwhelmingly stating that they were against the property being used for high-density residential purposes.
Attempts to reach the golf club’s last manager/operator, KemperSports, have been unsuccessful. The Land Source is the commercial real estate brokerage company marketing the sale of Rockwood, now at a listing price of $575,000.
“We’re very hopeful we can see some good there. Obviously, if the city could purchase that property, it could be wonderful,” Pat Daniels, The Land Source principal/broker, told The Examiner last week. “We are not advertising this property as an apartment tract or anything like that for rental housing.
“We’re hopeful that either the city could either take it on as a park or that we could have a nice housing community located there for the neighbors. It would be nice for some new neighbors.”
City officials want to remind residents that if they would like to speak at Monday’s City Council meeting about Rockwood, they must sign up with the city clerk’s office by noon Friday. Call 816-325-7000 for more information.
