A Grain Valley resident is hoping to follow in David Cook’s “American Idol” footsteps.

Luke Minx, 19, has made it to Hollywood Week on the Fox show “American Idol.” Auditioning in St. Louis, he received his golden ticket during the Feb. 2 episode.

A graduate of Lee’s Summit North High School, Minx is taking a leave of absence from Point Park University in Pittsburgh, Pa., to travel the “American Idol” road, one that Blue Springs native David Cook took all the way to the finish line, winning in 2008. Minx is studying musical theater at the performing arts school.

“My favorite Idol contestant has to be David Cook,” he said in a video on American Idol’s website. “I thought he was honest with his performances and the way he sang and took the competition seriously, but he was also humble about most everything. He seems like a really nice person.”

A solo artist, who also plays guitar, Minx said on the video that he has always wanted to audition for “American Idol,” he was just waiting for the right opportunity.

“I was just waiting for the year that I would be most prepared and have the best shot at it,” he said.

Hollywood Week begins tonight at 7 p.m. on WDAF Channel 4 (Comcast Cable channel 6). Contestants will perform by themselves or in groups in a series of rounds. Eliminations are usually made at the end of each round. At the end of Hollywood Week, 24 to 26 contestants will move onto the semifinal stage.
