Independence, MO —
It was a big turnout Tuesday night on the Independence Square when 500 residents, police officers and crime prevention volunteers attended a citywide block party called National Night Out. The citizens who participated reinforced police and community partnerships and sent a strong message to criminals that neighborhoods in Independence will not tolerate crime.
A big thanks to Ken and Cindy McClain for letting the Police Department and the Neighborhood Watch unit use their Pharaoh Theater’s parking lot. It was the perfect opportunity to reach many people in one spot in the center of Independence. In addition, the McClains secured a donation of an inflatable bouncer room and a slide, volunteers, music, raffled movie tickets and popcorn.
Other donations were from HyVee, Costco, The Home Depot, Jackson County Electrical Service, Inc., Missouri Mavericks and Independence Tourism Department. Volunteers were from the Volunteers in Police Service, Neighborhood Watch program, The Optimist Club, Sugar Creek Police Department Explorers, Independence Fire Department and Explorers, Community Emergency Response Team, American Medical Response, Crimestoppers and Independence Parks and Recreation. There were many police units such as K-9 Unit, Explosive Ordinal Disposal, Special Response Team, Accident Investigations and many more.
