The Fort Osage High School Student Council is partnering with the Belton High School Student Council in a fundraiser called “Sock It to Belton.”
The idea is to collect as many new pairs of socks as possible before Tuesday’s boys varsity basketball game against Belton. Each district’s total will be announced during half-time of the game. In addition, one student from each school who wins a raffle contest will be given the opportunity to enter a free throw contest to try to win two tickets to a Missouri Mavericks game. All schools in the Fort Osage School District are participating and will have a designated bin available in the office through Tuesday.
Seniors Cierra Pritchett and Maude Ashby along with sophomores Julie Gross and Andrew Looker are leading the sock drive at Fort Osage High School and hope to collect enough socks to beat Belton. All socks collected in Fort Osage will be donated to Caring Communities. Monetary donations will be used to purchase new socks.
1 Where did the idea come from for “Sock It to Belton?”
“There are a lot of drives during the year that collect clothes and food. But a lot of times, things such as socks and underwear are not donated,” Pritchett said. “We thought having a sock drive would be a good idea and teaming up with Belton just fit into our basketball schedule really well.”
2 Why did you decide to partner with another high school?
“I think it shows that we can strengthen every community, rather than just our own,” Ashby said. “It is also a fun way to bring competition into it.”
3 Why is it important for high school students to give back to the community through service projects?
“I think it shows that we are able to go out there as young adults and making a difference,” Gross said. “We are the rising generation. It shows that what we do benefits the community. AS a Student Council, it also shows that we can put forth the effort to go out there and do something. We are leaders in this school, so we want to make what we do known.”
4 Why is volunteering important to you?
“I worked with a gentleman at The groves that said it best. ‘Volunteering is a way to give back to those who can’t do what we can do,’” Pritchett said. “I think it also is a good way to perpetuate compassion for others.”
