The project: Independence School District’s new westside elementary school

Completion date: Summer 2013

Location: Southeast corner of North Forest Street and Silver Lane, Sugar Creek.

The details: An $85 million bond issue in 2009 is funding the construction of the elementary school on the west side of the Independence School District. When open, it will help to relieve the overcrowding at all of the elementary schools in western Independence, including Korte, Three Trails and Sugar Creek Elementary. It is one of two new elementary schools in the school district. The second school, Little Blue Elementary, is opening later this summer.

The progress: Grading and excavation work has started on the site, which was once covered by numerous trees and other debris. Several inches of dirt are also being removed. When all of the grading work is complete, construction on the facility can begin.

“We were moving at a good pace until all of the rain last month,” said Bob Robinson, director of buildings and grounds. “We are still on track, however, to open next summer.”
