The city of Independence’s annual celebration of one of life’s most important resources is coming up.
The fifth annual EcoFest – “It’s All About Water!” – will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 2 at the 80-acre Waterfall Park, 4501 S. Bass Pro Drive, near Bass Pro Shops.
The free, family-oriented event is designed to teach children and families about the importance of preserving and protecting the Earth’s natural resources and the environment in an entertaining, interactive format.
Bingham Middle School student Kaila Crosby is the winner of this year’s T-shirt contest. Entries were received from Bingham and Bridger middle schools and will be on display at EcoFest.
The “eco-passports” are back this year, in which participants will collect stickers by answering quiz questions as they visit different booths throughout the park. Those who complete their passports will receive a free T-shirt.
Eco-entertainers this year include the EcoStreet characters, Stan Slaughter and the Green Spirit Band, EcoElvis and the ReCycle Cycle. The Kansas City Kite Club also will return to brighten the park with colorful banners and kites.
Interactive displays include edible ice-cream aquifers, a stream table demonstrating stream bank erosion and water-themed games.
EcoFest sponsors include the Missouri Department of Conservation, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Little Blue River Watershed Coalition and several local groups.
