Many volunteers are needed to make events like the annual Pooches on the Parkway event successful. For Sherry Ciolek, volunteering to help in any capacity at the event means she can take better pride in where she lives.

The event is Sunday at Wilbur Young Park on Adams Dairy Road, and like always, it will be a great time for man and beast. The Examiner visited with Ciolek and asked her about the event.

Can you tell us a little bit about the popular event happening in Blue Springs on Sunday?
Pooches on the Parkway is a pet and family-friendly fundraising expo which benefits and provides improvements to the Blue Springs Off-leash Dog Park. Admission is free and there will be doggy contests, games, K-9 vendors, dog adoptions and concessions. Registration and a $25 fee is required for the 1-, 2- or 3-mile Fun Walk at 1 p.m. which includes a commemorative T-shirt and goodie bag.

How did you get involved in volunteering with Pooches on the Parkway?
My dogs love the Blue Springs dog park and I wanted to make sure it continued to grow and improve.

What benefits does this event have for both the people and the animals?
This event helps promote awareness of the beautiful off-leash dog park right here in our hometown. Dog parks build a community bond. Neighbors get to know each other, which leads to civic involvement and stronger neighborhoods. Well-exercised, well socialized dogs are better canine citizens.

Are more volunteers needed, and, if so, how do they join?
Volunteers are always welcome, whether for this event or one of the other fundraising events we have throughout the year. We have a Chili Dog Dinner in January and Pooches in the Pool in September. Check out our Facebook page for upcoming volunteer requests and meeting announcements at  www.facebook.com/BlueSpringsDogPark. Or contact Pam Buck with Blue Springs Parks and Recreation at 228-0238 or 645-0287.

Why is it important to volunteer in your community?

Community involvement is a way for me to ensure my community is headed in a direction that I can be proud to live in.
