Betty Grimm has been coming to the Blue Springs Fall Fun Festival for years, and every year, there is one booth she goes to first.
“We love the Timmy Burgers. They’re the best,” the Blue Springs resident said, referring to the Timothy Lutheran Church Steakburger booth. “I have no idea why they are so good, but we wait in line for them every year.”
The annual festival wrapped up Sunday after a weekend of pleasant weather and a variety of activities, including the parade. The theme for this year’s parade was “Peace, Love and Rock ‘n’ Roll,” which brought out the 1960s in almost all of the groups.
“The Blue Spring Chamber of Commerce, which is the sponsor of the Blue Springs Fall Fun Festival, is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year, so the Festival Committee selected the theme of ‘Peace, Love and Rock ’n’ Roll,’ ” said Sue McMilian, director of special events for the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce. “Our orange tye-dye collectible shirts where a huge hit, and myself and the volunteers received many compliments about the shirt design. Our parade entries really enjoyed and played up the theme of ‘Peace, Love & Rock ’n’ Roll’ in the float and costume designs. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much tye-dyed clothing in one place.”
For the past several years, rain and severe weather impacted the festival, even causing an evacuation in 2008. However, that was not the case this year, as mild temperatures and clear weather welcomed festival attendees.
“We love coming every year to eat all the good food and to see the crafts,” said Kelly Adams of Lee’s Summit. “It has a great family atmosphere.”
McMilian said she is happy with how the weekend turned out and was pleased with the new additions to this year’s festival, including the T-shirt and the Chill Zone. The area was staffed by the Medical Reserve Corps of Greater Kansas City and was able to take care of minor bumps, bruises or blisters. It was co-sponsored by the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce and Centerpoint Urgent Care Center.
In addition, more than $1,000 was raised in the beer garden for the Blue Springs Community Services League.
“The Blue Springs Fall Fun Festival was an absolute, huge success this year,” McMilian said. “We had vendors commenting to our volunteers that this was one of their best festivals yet in 2012. I heard that a couple of the non-profit food vendors ran out of what product they had prepared, and that they had to reload late Saturday night so that they were prepared for Sunday’s crowd. It was a great festival.”
