Nothing went right for Greg Oder's Blue Springs South Jaguars Friday night.

The Jaguars, ranked 10th in Class 6, dropped to 3-2 after suffering their second shutout loss of the season, a 28-0 setback to sixth-ranked Rockhurst at Larry Stewart Memorial Stadium.

The Jaguars, who have had problems with their kicking game this season, missed an early field goal, then wound up on the Hawklets’ 21-yard line following a fumble recovery on the 8. On fourth and goal, South quarterback Dalton Brewer was sacked for the second time in the series, setting the stage for a long night of frustration.

“We're a good team, and Rockhurst is a good team,” said South's Jordan Moon, who enjoyed a stellar night in the backfield and the secondary for the Jaguars. “They were just better than we were tonight. We're both well coached and we both wanted to win this game, they played a lot better than us.

“We scored 44 points last week (in a 44-33 win at Staley), and we didn't score any tonight, but that's not going to get us down. We're too good to let this loss get us down. We'll work hard this week and come back strong next Saturday.”

Oder felt the same way, adding, “We knew they were going to play the two quarterbacks and each one of them did a nice job. No. 6 (Ahmad Tyler) is the runner and No. 9 (Trey Vickers) is the passer and they both had a big night.

“We can't get the ball on the 8-yard line with the score 21-0 and wind up back on the 21. And we need to improve on special teams – and we will. This is too good of a team; we have too many good character kids, to let this one loss affect the way we play the rest of the season.”

For one quarter, both defenses ruled as neither team could find the end zone. But things changed in the second period when Rockhurst scored 21 unanswered points.

Tyler, who is known more for his rushing ability, hit Harrison Lanning for a 26-yard touchdown after showing some nifty footwork in the backfield to avoid the rush of South's Cole West. Griffin Bins kicked the first of four extra points and it was 7-0 at the 9:13 mark.

Six minutes later, Tyler threw his second touchdown pass, this time connecting with Connor Kuhlman on a 19-yard scoring play.

Vickers then entered the game and threw a back-breaking 25-yard touchdown to Zach Nelson with just eight seconds left in the half.

Vickers fired a 68-yard pass to Cameron Winston to set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Jack Benninghoff in the third period for the final score of the night.

“Greg's got a nice team, and they're going to win a lot more games this season,” Rockhurst coach Tony Severino said after his team improved to 3-2. “Our two quarterbacks had a nice night, but it was the guys on the defensive line who set the tone tonight.”
