In November 1982, 10 Independence residents signed the articles of incorporation to create a public Community Foundation for the Independence area. The Community Foundation will honor the 10 founding members with special awards. The five living members are: Carol Sue Bass, Kyle Conway, Lloyd Uptegrove, Carole Roper Park Vaughan and Luva Vaughan. The other five members: Phil Weeks, Lauzon Maxwell, R. Edwin Browne, William A. Piedimonte, and Donald E. The Truman Heartland Community Foundation is celebrating three decades of service to the area communities.

The Toast to Our Towns Gala will recognize Humanitarians of the Year honorees David and Shirley Wurth of Raytown. It also will pay tribute to the Community of Christ as the foundation's Community Partner Award winner. As always, Citizen of the Year awards will go out to individuals from around the foundation's service area.

This is the 17th annual Toast to Our Towns Gala. It will be held Saturday night at the Kansas City Marriott Downtown.

As part of the 30th anniversary, the gala also will recognize key leaders in the foundation's history.
