Students and staff past and present are invited to celebrate 25 years of learning and education at William Bryant Elementary School.
“I think it is important to recognize and remember the stages of your life,” said Diana Myler, school secretary at William Bryant in Blue Springs. “WBE has helped shape the lives of hundreds of students.”
William Bryant will be celebrating its 25th anniversary from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the school, 1101 S.E. Sunnyside School Road. Festivities will include an all-school picnic in the gymnasium and on the playground. There will be a reception in the school library where former principals and faculty will be recognized. A display of school history will also be in the library.
“We have former students who stop by the school all the time hoping to see some of their former teachers,” Myler said. “In most cases, the teachers they are looking for have retired or moved on in their career. It is important to reconnect with people who have made a difference in your life.”
Myler said there have been many changes over the years. But one of the biggest is the change in student population, which was gone from more than 500 students to about 380. The addition of all-day kindergarten a few years ago brought a new addition, which added two kindergarten classrooms. Technology has also changed moving from floppy disks to overhead projectors, smart boards and computerized grade books. But one event still stands out.
“Probably the most memorable moment for me would be the 1989-90 school year when the entire school went to Missouri Town for the whole day. Everyone went, cafeteria workers, custodians, office workers. Everyone dressed in period attire. It was a great day,” she said. “There have been many memories of talent shows, assemblies, student achievements and those ‘funny things that kids say’ moments. WBE has been a close knit family, sharing joys and sadness through the years.”
Myler said they expect more than 300 people to attend the picnic. She said 10 to 12 former William Bryant teachers also plan to attend. She said the responses shows what a “family” William Bryant continues to be, even 25 years later.
“Over the years, WBE has been like a family. Not just the staff members, but the entire student body and their families,” she said. “We have laughed together, cried together and prayed together. Once a Bobcat, always a Bobcat.”
