Mariah Peters and the Blue Springs girls golf team were challenged Tuesday morning in the MSHSAA Class 2 State Championships.

But coach Jill Courter said the team, especially Peters, kept its composure on a tough par-73 Dalhousie Golf Club course and finished the day with the program’s third state trophy and its best finish since taking second in 1997.

“The course was very challenging and we didn’t play our best golf, so we’re thrilled to come home with a fourth-place finish,” Courter said. “This was one of the toughest courses we’ve been on, and it got to everyone’s nerves a little. It was tough, but the girls came through, and I’m so happy about that.”

Peters especially came through, firing a 77 in Tuesday’s final round to finish with a two-day total of 155 to capture second individually, just two strokes behind champion Amanda Kim of Fort Zumwalt South.

“This means so much to me to get all-state two years in a row,” said Peters, a sophomore who tied for sixth last year to earn the honor that goes to the top 15 individual finishers. “I finished in the top three, and that’s where I wanted to be.
“… And it’s so much more exciting to get a state trophy and have my teammates here with me. It made the experience so much better and made it so much more fun to play this year.”

Blue Springs South’s Madison Frerking just missed a chance at an all-state honor, shooting 182 (93-89) to finish just five strokes off the all-state cut.

Blue Springs shot 400 Tuesday to finish with a two-day total of 775, five strokes better than fifth-place St. Joseph’s Academy. Columbia Rock Bridge won the title with a 712 total, followed by first-round leader Lafayette-Wildwood (732) and Notre Dame de Sion (752).

Senior Kristin Shaw shot 189 (91-98) to tie for 38th; Jailyn Marshall posted a 209 (98-111) to tie for 72nd; Hannah Reynolds totaled 222 (108-114) to finish 83rd; and Ally Guffey shot 227 (110-117) to take 84th and complete Blue Springs’ scoring.

Blue Springs South’s Jordan Rehkow tied for 52nd at 196 (97-99) and teammate Tara Thorp tied for 72nd at 209 (106-103).

It wasn’t the scores Courter was hoping to see from her team, but most of the golfers shot worse on Tuesday.

“I know some of the girls feel like they could have played better, so that’s why we’re really excited to get fourth,” Courter said.

Peters said she was happy to shoot in the 70s both days on a course she said was as tough as the Staley Farms Golf Club the team played at the sectional tournament.

Peters said she struggled at first, but turned it around to shoot 4-over for the day.

“I putted really well, but I had a hard time getting off the tee today,” said Peters, who had one birdie Tuesday and four overall. “I couldn’t hit it in the position I wanted to and I was scrambling, but then I got it together. I started to trust my swing instead of trying to guide the ball.”

Said Courter: “I was proud of the way she kept her composure and held it together.”

Lee’s Summit West finished eighth with an 828 total (417-411), as Mason Fender earned all-state honors with a tie for 13th place at 176 (87-89). Lee’s Summit’s Jamie Weeda tied for 42nd at 191 (99-92).
