The Missouri Mavericks discovered two things Friday night at the Independence Events Center.
First, all good things must come to an end.

Second, if you don’t play 60 minutes of solid hockey, you don’t have much of a chance of winning.

A lethargic Mavericks team squandered a two-goal lead and could not get a shot past Quad City goaltender David Brown in the shootout as Quad City claimed a 5-4 victory in front of a sold-out crowd of 5,800, to end the team’s home winning streak at eight games.

The third-place Mavericks did pick up one point with the shootout loss and lead the Mallards by three points (48-45) going into Saturday’s game against the same Quad City squad.

“We might look back at this game as getting a point we didn’t deserve, or a point we did not get that killed us later in the season,” Mavericks coach Scott Hillman said.

“We had won eight games in a row at the IEC, and tonight we played like we thought we had it won before it was over. We had four good shifts, and those were the shifts where we scored.

“We played maybe 20 minutes of hockey, and a hockey game is 60 minutes. We never got into any type of a flow and again, we made some big mistakes.”

The biggest mistake came at 17:43 of the fourth quarter when a Maverick defender passed the puck from near the net to Quad City’s Obi Aduba, who fired it past goaltender Charlie Effinger to knot the score at 4-all.

Quad City outshot the Mavericks 47-34.

After an early Quad City goal, the Mavericks scored three straight goals with Dave Pszenyczny, Kris Hogg and Ed McGrane all finding the net.

Quad City’s Mickey Lang scored on a rebound with just 36 seconds left in the second period to make it 3-2 going into the final 20 minutes of play.

Missouri’s Brandon Coccimiglio scored to give the Mavericks a two-goal lead, but two late Mallard goals sent the game into overtime.

“This game was a reality check,” McGrane said. “We’d won eight in a row at home, and this one brought us back down to earth. Coach just told us, we need to play 60 minutes of hockey.

“We didn’t do that. Every guy in that locker room knows we didn’t do that. They played with a lot more intensity and they found a way to win. We got a point, and that’s important, but it makes tomorrow night’s game even more important.

“We wanted to get four points this weekend. Now, we have to win tomorrow night to get three. I’m happy we play them again tomorrow night so we don’t have that much time to think about tonight. After a loss like this, you want to get right back out on the ice.”
