As a future student of Little Blue Elementary School, there are tough decisions to be made. One of the biggest is deciding what mascot will serve as the identity of the new Independence elementary.
After a week of submissions of potential mascots for the building, the massive list has been narrowed to five – Badgers, Blue Herons, Blue Jays, Hawks and Sharks.
“A mascot is such a significant and important symbol to any school and can represent many aspects of the student body,” principal Jeff Williams said. “It can symbolize the character, the determination and the drive of students. Because of the significance of the symbol it creates, we want to ensure our students have the opportunity to participate in the mascot’s selection.”
The mascot selection process began June 5 with a kick-off event, where different organizations shared with students how mascots are chosen.
They then had a week to submit potential mascots, which were narrowed by a committee made up of staff and students.
“The mascot selection will be an important piece for our school community,” Williams said. “It will mark the beginning of our students, staff and families coming together to begin to shape our school’s identity and begin the process of building involvement and ownership with Little Blue Elementary.”
A link will be available on Little Blue’s website until June 22, so students and families can make their final decision.
Visit the Independence School District’s website, www.ourindependenceschools.org, and select “Little Blue” from the “Schools” tab.
The mascot will be unveiled during the school’s open house and ribbon cutting at 6 p.m. July 19.
