An Independence family is safe after a fire destroyed its home in the 100 block of South Fuller Street this morning.
Independence police were first on the scene and reported a fully involved structure fire, said Aaron McNabb, an Independence Fire Department captain. Fire crews arrived and extinguished the blaze.
Five people were living in the home, plus two guests who had been staying with the family. Only four were at home when the blaze started sometime before noon. All escaped without injury, including the family’s dog.
The Red Cross is helping the family, which did not want to be identified, find a place to stay tonight.
The daughter-in-law of the woman renting the home said they were working with the landlord to find a more long-term solution.
The fire remains under investigation.
