Most municipalities – including Independence, Blue Springs, Grain Valley, Oak Grove and Lake Lotawana – in Eastern Jackson County participate in regional programs for disposing solid waste and hazardous materials.
• Independence - A solid waste drop-off depot is available for Eastern Jackson County residents at 875 Vista Drive in Independence (next to the Independence Animal Shelter)
Hours: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month, March through November.
Pricing: Trash: Cars – $10, vehicles larger than a car – $15, trailers over 8 ft. long – $25, misc. trash – furniture, shingles, televisions, carpet, fencing, sheetrock, windows, etc. No liquids, gas tanks, or sealed drums.
Brush – $10 per vehicle for limbs, firewood, bushes, stumps. No Leaves or Grass.
Tires – car – $1, car (on rim) – $3, truck – $4, truck (on rim) – $10
Appliances: $15 – Refrigerators, hot water heaters, stoves, dishwashers, washers, dryers, freezers.
Lawnmowers – No charge (must have all fluids drained).
Batteries (auto, boat, lawnmower, motorcycle) – no charge
• Household hazardous waste - Municipalities in Eastern Jackson County participate in the Mid-America Regional Council’s Solid Waste Management District, a regional program that encompasses Cass, Clay, Jackson, Platte and Ray counties in Missouri.
The program provides the environmentally responsible alternative to certain wastes being poured down drains or onto the ground. Proper disposal of household hazardous wastes makes homes safer and reduces health risks.
Residents of participating communities may take household hazardous wastes to permanent collection facilities in Kansas City and Lee’s Summit at no charge. (Proof of residency is required.)
Residents of participating communities may also drop off household hazardous wastes at any of the mobile collections held throughout the year. There is a disposal charge per vehicle for residents of non-participating communities.

The facility accepts automotive fluids, batteries, fuels, household cleaners, lawn and garden products, pesticides, paint and related products. The facility does not accept explosives, yard waste, medical waste, commercial waste, pressurized gas cylinders over 5 lbs., asbestos, tires, appliances, gas cylinders up to 5 pounds.
Hours: Open on the third Wednesday (2 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., only antifreeze, batteries, motor oil and paint) of each month and the first Saturday (7 a.m. to noon) April-November. Appointment required.
Who can bring waste: No charge for residents of Lee’s Summit and the regional household hazardous waste collection program. Must bring ID with proof of residency. There is a disposal charge per vehicle for residents of non-participating communities. There is a 100-pound limit.
