Independence, MO —

Matt Garrett is the naturalist at George Owens Nature Park.

1 As the George Owens Park naturalist, how have you made the park more environmentally friendly?
We’ve added two rain gardens, native flower beds, rain barrels and have begun restoring a glade near the nature center. I’ve increased nature programming with our popular nature story time, night hikes and junior naturalist programs.

2 In what other ways have you helped the city of Independence go green?
I am currently mentoring a team of employees from the city’s IDEA Academy that planted a rain garden between Fire House 7 and Adventure Oasis water park. The rain garden catches storm water before it reaches our streams.

3 How do you practice green living in your personal life?
I bought a home that allows me to bicycle or walk to businesses. I take the bus when possible and try to buy local goods and support local farms. I always bring reusable bags to the grocery store!

4  What is the greatest sacrifice you’ve made to limit your carbon footprint?
Riding the bus to social events and biking to the grocery store takes more time, but I wouldn’t call it a sacrifice. You get to stop and smell the roses.

5 What are some of the easiest ways people can make a difference?
Our local natural resources like George Owens Nature Park are special and unique to Independence. Volunteering your time at the park is easy and makes a huge difference. We need your help.
