Tell us a little bit about yourself and what your company does. My name is Kim Humbert, and I am president of Advantage Framing Systems, Inc. Advantage was formed in 2002 with a primary goal of utilizing engineered component systems in new home construction.
Are you seeing more and more people asking for green-related homes and/or materials? Yes, both builders and homeowners are asking more questions about green construction and products. I feel it is important as a business owner to have a green product that is also economically feasible for the consumer.
What are the benefits of utilizing this kind of framing in homes? Framing with components will greatly reduce waste and misuse of materials, which also helps control the budget of the project. Components also shorten the construction cycle time.
Why is the Kansas City area becoming such a pioneer in the Green Movement, and what resources are out there for people to follow green standards? The nice thing about building green is that each individual can choose how green they want to go; there is no right or wrong. There are also several resources to help. One is the HBA. It has established a council to help educate and promote green building.
Until the majority of people can live in these types of homes or in homes that utilize these materials, what small steps and changes can they make to live a greener life? I think you would be surprised by the number of people that live in a green home and don’t know it. Advantage has a green framing process, so any home we have constructed with components meets basic framing guidelines.
