More than $2 million in grant funding will allow Swope Health Services to construct a new clinic in Independence.

The Health Resources and Services Administration awarded Swope Health Services two capital development grants totaling $2,518,313, which were made available through the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

That act’s funding supports the construction and expansion of services at community health centers nationwide, with the goal of meeting the growing demand for health care among uninsured patients.

A $2,018,313 grant will allow Swope Health Services to build a new Independence clinic “with sufficient space to accommodate a growing, medically vulnerable patient base,” according to a press release. The existing Independence site is at 1638 E. U.S. 24.

The remaining $500,000 will go toward renovating the radiology and mammography rooms and purchasing state-of-the-art digitized imaging equipment for mammography and the dental department at Swope Health Central.

Swope Health Services is a system of federally qualified clinics that provides primary health care, dental and behavioral health services at 11 treatment centers throughout the greater Kansas City area.
