The beautiful Independence Events Center opens today. I have been in Independence from day one, and it’s amazing how far we’ve come.
As I look back on the time we spent putting this together, it is hard to believe that the season is already here. We walked into an office that wasn’t ours. We had no desks, no computers, no staff and no team name – just Mark Adams, Brad Lund, Bob Rennison and I working cooperatively to put an organization together to what is now known as the Missouri Mavericks.
As Independence Pro Hockey began to take its form in March, everyone involved agreed on the goal of providing “affordable family entertainment.” As we began the journey toward opening night, we have strived to keep this at the forefront of our organization.
Resumes poured in from all over North America wanting a front office position or spot on the roster. We had applicants from Canada, California, Texas and New York. People could already see that this franchise had a bright future. After collecting some of the finest talent from all over the United States, we are confident that we have assembled the best front office staff in minor league pro hockey.
One of the most exciting components of putting together a team was the “Name the Team” contest. It definitely was not the easiest task! We had thousands of great entries, but only one winner emerged. Since that day, we have strived to put together a franchise that everyone will be proud of.
In less than a week, we will host our first home game and the hard work of so many people will be showcased.
We hope to see you today at Independence Events Center for a historic day in Independence!
