After placing Kyle Bochek on the 30-day injured reserve list, the Missouri Mavericks made a couple of moves Tuesday to bolster their roster.
The Mavericks announced Tuesday they had signed rookie forward Nick Sirota and traded for the rights to veteran forward Karl Sellan.
The Mavericks acquired Sellan, 24, from the Arizona Sundogs for future considerations. He is in his fourth Central Hockey League season, spending the previous three with Arizona.
Sellan, a 5-foot-11, 200-pound left wing from Montreal, Quebec, is Arizona’s all-time leader in penalty minutes (845), goals (79) power-play goals (37) and game-winning goals (10). He has 124 regular-season points – 73 goals and 51 assists – in 182 games.
“Karl is a proven performer in the CHL,” Mavericks coach Scott Hillman said. “He is a 20-plus goal scorer for three straight years and won a championship with Arizona two years ago. Karl will have an immediate impact on our team with his leadership and energy.”
Sellan has not yet signed. When he does, another roster move is expected. To complete the trade, the rights of a player to be named after the season will be traded to Arizona.
Sirota, 25, is in his rookie season after spending the last four years with Northern Michigan University. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound forward played three games with the Idaho Steelheads of the East Coast Hockey League last season after completing his college eligibility and had a goal and two assists. He had 45 goals and 45 assists in 145 games with Northern Michigan.
“Nick is a young, exciting player,” Hillman said of the Fox Lake, Wis., native. “He proved that he can put points on the board in the pro game, and we will put him in a key offensive role where he will also contribute on the power play.”
Bochek was put on the 30-day IR after sitting out the first two games last weekend in Rapid City. He was injured in the final exhibition game against Wichita on Oct. 10.
