A bad first period doomed the Missouri Mavericks’ chances for a third straight win Friday.

The Mavericks fell 6-2 to the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees at Dodge Arena.

Killer Bees’ goaltender Andy Franck stopped 34 of 36 shots for his second win of the season and the Bees improved to 4-3-0 including three straight victories. The Mavericks couldn’t overcome four first-period goals and fell to 2-6-0 on the season.

“Tonight was a terrible performance,” Mavericks head coach Scott Hillman said. “We will be much better tomorrow.  We must clean up our defensive zone and not allow multiple odd-man rushes.”

Andrew Schembri scored two goals and Daymen Rycroft had a goal and two assists to lead the Bees to the win. Rio Grande Valley had four goals on their first eight shots against Mavericks goalie Doug Groenestege. Missouri’s Carlyle Lewis scored his second goal of the season at the 10:38 mark to make it a 4-1 game heading into the first intermission.

Mavericks forward Derek Pallardy scored his first goal of the season at the 15:20 mark of the third period, but Missouri didn’t have enough time left.

Missouri’s 36 shots were its most this season, but the team was unable to score on the power play for the third straight game.
