Independence, MO —

What is your take on Englewood possibly becoming designated as an arts district? (All of the following residents represent Englewood businesses.)

Diane Houk
president of board of directors, Puppetry Arts Institute

“Of course, I’m really excited about it because my dad started the original Englewood 5 & 10 store in 1945 after World War II. I worked in there starting at age 14. At that time in Englewood, there were two grocery stores, a drug store, a bakery, a hardware store, a camera store and the post office was right next door. We feel like this could be a place with unusual things and a neighborhood nostalgia.”

Linda Austin
co-owner, Austin Five & Dime Store

“I think that’s wonderful. I think this area needs more entertainment and more businesses. It’s just really wonderful to bring this area back instead of it all going out east.”

Frances Edwards
clerk, Englewood Cleaners

“I think it’d be nice, and I think it’d probably bring in more revenue. I hate seeing all of our empty buildings.”
