Eastern Jackson County —

Whether you are looking for a tug-of-war with a largemouth bass or just a peaceful day at the lake, you don’t have to go far to find some great fishing spots. After consulting with Gene Fox and Todd Gemeinhardt at the Missouri Department of Conservation, here are The Examiner’s top 10 fishing spots in Eastern Jackson County.

10 Longview Lake. This 930-acre lake supports several different fish species, but its catfish population is what puts it in the upper echelon. Gemeinhardt said, “There are excellent numbers of channel catfish, and it is probably the best fishery out there for the species.”

9 Bowlin Road Pond. This little-known 4-acre pond in Fleming Park off Missouri 291 has good fishing for channel catfish.

8 Wyatt Pond. This 3-acre pond, at the William Landahl Park Reserve, has bass, catfish and sunfish waiting to be caught.

7 Lone Jack Lake. With a boat ramp and two fishing jetties, several options are available to anglers at Lone Jack Lake. Gemeinhardt said bluegill and redear are the best fish to go after. It also supports largemouth bass and catfish.

6 Blue Springs Lake. This 720-acre lake has several species of fish in its waters. Fox and Gemeinhardt said the lake is best known for its hybrid striped bass.

5 Missouri River. Fox recommends the “Big Muddy” for its catfish and jumping carp. Boat ramps are available at La Benite Park in Sugar Creek and Fort Osage County Park in Sibley.

4 Lake Remembrance. Good shoreline fishing is available on this 54-acre lake in Gregory O. Grounds Park in Blue Springs. The lake was recently constructed and only opened for fishing last year. It has good populations of bass, catfish, crappie and sunfish.

3 Prairie Lee Lake. For bass and crappie, this 150-acre lake just south of Lake Jacomo is a prime place to fish.

2 James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area. Located near Lee’s Summit, this area has several lakes. Fox noted that Coot Lake, Honker Pond and Plover Lake are seasonally stocked with rainbow trout.

1 Lake Jacomo. For the best fishing in Eastern Jackson County, just look for the county’s namesake body of water. Fox says the lake’s waters are full of several species including walleye, white bass, largemouth bass and catfish. So remember, next time you are looking to catch a lunker, just cast your line in EJC.
