The Jackson County Board of Election Commissioners conducts all elections and handles all voter registration in Jackson County outside of Kansas City.
Independence gets its water from a deep aquifer below the Missouri River north of the city.
Founded in 1827, Independence was incorporated in 1849. In 1961, residents changed the city’s form of government to the city charter form of government it has today.

The state of Missouri, home to nearly 6 million people, has been a part of the union since 1820. Jefferson City has been the capital city since 1826 because of its central location.
Jackson County government, located in the downtown Kansas City Courthouse Building, 415 E. 12th St., operates under a home-rule charger approved by voters in 1978.
