Since Andrew Drumm created the institute in 1929, Drumm Farm has been committed to providing foster children with a safe, stable, permanent place to live. The staff and community supporters enable the children to grow up with their biological siblings in a warm and loving environment where they can enjoy their childhood. The children are able to grow up with the support they need to become successful adults.
According to the Andrew Drumm Institute Web site, more than 12,000 children are in the foster care system in Missouri alone. Many times, foster children are moved from home to home and during the process they are separated from their biological siblings. But Drumm Farm allows the children to grow up with their biological siblings for a more healthy childhood.
Drumm Farm is dedicated to helping children set educational goals based on individual strengths and to reach the highest possible level of education or training by supporting the children’s public school success. Drumm Farm provides the students with the resources necessary to succeed in school, such as individualized tutoring, study hours and computer access.
All of the children live in small family-style homes with professionally trained couples as house parents. The couples must be 21 years of age or older and have degrees in fields related to foster care. Secondary caregivers are not required to be married and may still apply for positions.
Drumm Farm is funded by the state of Missouri and private funding. It is at 3210 Lee’s Summit Road in Independence and is surrounded by a 200-acre golf course on former farmland.
In the fall Drumm Farm hosts golf tournaments at Drumm Farm Golf Club with proceeds benefiting he children.
