Two U.S. senators represent Missouri, and two U.S. representatives have Independence in their districts. Senators are elected to six-year terms, and representatives are elected to two-year terms. There are no term limits in Congress.

• Sen. Claire McCaskill was elected to the Senate in 2006. McCaskill, a Democrat, was born in Rolla, Mo., grew up in Lebanon, Mo., and Columbia, Mo., and now lives in St. Louis. She is a former state representative, former Jackson County prosecutor and former state auditor.

McCaskill serves on these committees:
Armed Services; Commerce, Science and Transportation; Homeland Security and Government Affairs; Aging; Indian Affairs; The Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations (formerly known as the Truman Committee).
